Creating an Old Photograph Look

Use this technique if you want to make an image look like those grainy pre-World War I photographs.

  • Create a new image with a white background that is twice the width and twice the height of the original image.

  • Copy the original image into the centre of the new image.

  • Without deselecting the original image, select Image | Special Effects | Create Seamless Pattern. This will crop the image back to its original size, but create a fog effect around the edges.

  • Select Image | Special Filters | Add Noise... to bring up the Add Noise dialog box. Select Uniform Noise and enter a value between 20% and 40%, depending upon how grainy you want the image.

  • Colourise the image by applying Colors | Colorize... with a Hue of 30 and a Saturation of 40. Vary the hue depending upon what tone you want to set and the saturation by how colour-stained the image should be.
