Style Guides

  • Sun's Guide to Web Style
One of the highest quality sites for web design. Discusses issues ranging from creating a cohesive site design, to how long pages should be, to how and what to put on your pages and why. Highly, highly recommended if you plan to do anything on the web.

  • Yale C/AIM WWW Style Manual
Another excellent guide to website design. After having read this one and the one at Sun, you should have a good understanding of the issues in creating a usable worthwhile website.

  • Style Guide for Online Hypertext
Useful guide to web style tips from Tim Berners-Lee, the guy who created the web. Lots of basic stuff, but some unusual tips that you may have forgotten.

Articles

  • What Makes a Great Web Site?
Good article that highlights some of the important aspects of web design. More geared toward designing a personal site than a corporate site, though many things apply to both.

  • Top Ten Mistakes in Web Design
I've designed and been told to design sites which break these. In all instances, I've discovered later that this has caused minor to enormous problems. Take heed. (Note that though I'm stubborn and I know I'm still using font colours on this site).

  • Top 10 Ways To Make A WWW Flop
Sarcastic, but brings to light a lot of things you forget when designing a site.
