Notes.....book of five rings

The Earth Book
CHI NO MAKI

  • "The teacher is the needle and the disciple is the thread." The master, or teacher, guides the student's personal understanding of whatever is being done, with enlightenment as the ultimate goal. The student is part of the resulting awareness. The master is not.

  • From one thing know ten thousand things: Being adept (in the sense of kü) at anything give you the opportunity to take what one knows and apply it to other things.

  • The virtue of the long sword (tachi): The virtues of the bushi; the code of honour and loyalty, benevolence and humility, represented by the sword.

  • Harmony amonst all things is achieved by rememebering context and responding appropriately within that context.

On the Five Chapters of This Book on Heihö

  • The five chapters: CHI (earth/land), MIZU (water), HI (fire), KAZE (wind), and KÜ (emptiness).

  • The spirit of water: Water alters its shape according to the shape of its container, be it square or round, and it can be a drop or an ocean.

  • The spirit of fire: Fires can be large or small and change suddenly and drastically.

  • "Unless one knows well about others, it is not possible to know oneself." Wind chapter discusses other schools.
